New Homestead Neighborhood Event Celebrates Community’s Historical Treasures & Business Renaissance
June 26, 10 am to 4 pm
Pittsburgh, PA—DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh unwraps the renaissance happening in the colorful and eclectic Homestead neighborhood with a new self-guided walking tour event. It takes place Saturday, June 26 from 10 am to 4 pm and includes 20 building tour stops, offering visitors behind-the-scenes access, guided tours, beer and wine tastings and more. Its open-house style so everyone creates their own tour route and pace, and volunteers will help to bring each location to life.
“Getting to know Homestead was an incredible surprise. So much vibrancy and change,” says Bonnie Baxter, Executive Director. “I am tickled over the people I have met–they love their neighborhood and genuinely want to share it with others. The sense of community is organic and authentic. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Tour goers will:
1. Explore 20 buildings including: spaces reimagined for working, living and gaming, several beautiful and historic churches, and more.
2. Chat with Mayor Betty Esper at her office and Porky Chedwick’s wife, Jean at the KSD Radio studio.
3. Go behind the scenes for Insider Tours at Millie’s Ice Cream Factory and the infamous 8th Avenue.
4. Help to celebrate Homestead’s Main Street retailers, bars and restaurants.
5. Check out the community plaza for folk arts vendors, an exhibit by Roadkill Gallery and local artists creating original spray can artworks along sidewalks.
6. Visit Frick Park for live performances by local jazz artists (1008 Amity Street).
7. Experience two optional spirit’s tastings
a. The Forge Urban Winery's wine bar and piano lounge is offering pre-purchase for wine flights, cheese boards, and wine by the glass or bottle.
b. Voodoo Brewing Company, a well-known craft brewery, is offering a pre-purchase for samples of their flagship brews.
“We are excited for DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh to come to Homestead. Our town is open, and we really want people to visit and see for themselves all Homestead has to offer,” adds Mayor Betty Esper.
To make it easy for tour goers, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh has secured free metered parking and surface lot parking for the day. Additionally, a free shuttle bus will run continuously starting at 10:15 am and will stop at the Bost Building, THIS IS RED, Carnegie of Homestead and the Hays Mansion.
