Family-Friendly Activities Downtown

PITTSBURGH, September 24, 2022 – Appealing to future artists, architects, historians, and preservationists, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, a local non-profit organization, is presenting a Kids’ Neighborhood Photo Safari contest.

As part of the large-scale DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh: Downtown 2022 event on Saturday, October 1st, this contest will take kids across Downtown to look up, over, and inside to snap pictures of the items on their Photo Safari bingo cards to see if they can earn three in a row and win a prize.

Kids ages 5-12 will be searching for architectural features such as marquees, fountains, and stained glass, introducing them to the concept of architecture as art.

The Kids’ Neighborhood Photo Safari is meant to showcase how buildings can add meaning to a city’s identity and to generate interest and appreciation for our architectural treasures, overall design and artform. Additionally, local author Angela D. Moss will also be reading excerpts from her new middle-grade youth novel, The Case of the Counterfeit Painting, which takes readers on a tour through Pittsburgh as the young protagonist tries to stop an art thief. Moss, who cites a love of being a “tourist in her own city”, released the book earlier this year. For info: https://doorsopenpgh.org/doors-open-pittsburgh-downtown-2022-book-reading/

Participating buildings (there are 35) will highlight a large swath of Downtown buildings that include art galleries, corporate offices, theaters, commercial residential, sacred places, and more. For building list: https://doorsopenpgh.org/doors-open-pittsburgh-downtown-2022-building-list/

The Grable Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Pittsburgh region, has underwritten this new event activity.

Tickets for DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh: Downtown 2022 are currently on sale -- $18 for general admission (discounted for kids and seniors). Game cards for the Kids’ Neighborhood Photo Safari bingo card will be included in the Event Guide (available on 9/23).
