DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh Highlights August 2023 Tour Lineup

Pittsburgh, July 31, 2023 - Now in its 8th season, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, a local non-profit, is proud to highlight its exciting August tour schedule.

Live performance lovers will enjoy a rare and in-depth look at the venues, backstages and production studios of Point Park University’s showpiece cultural venue with Pittsburgh Playhouse: Behind the Scenes on Saturday, August 5th, 2023. General manager and producer Kim Martin will share stories of her 500+ career productions, followed by a historic look at the adjoining Gilded Era Bank Center and Stock Exchange. Tickets are priced at $20 with four tour times to choose from at 10:00am, 11:30am, 1:00pm and 2:30pm. The tour duration is 60 minutes and begins/ends at 350 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Martha Berg, official archivist for the oldest and largest Reform Jewish congregation in Western PA, will guide An Architectural Jewel-Box: Rodef Shalom Congregation insider tour on Sunday, August 6th, 2023. Guests will explore its history and spaces from the majestic sanctuary to the stained glass windows and the adjacent outdoor Biblical Botanical Garden, designed as a replica of ancient Israel. Tickets are priced at $25 with four tour times to choose from at 10:00am, 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:00pm. The tour duration is 45 minutes and begins/ends at 4905 Fifth Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Free parking is available in the lot behind the building.

Also on Sunday, August 6th, 2023, professional counselor James Ellermeyer, MA, NCC, LPC, will lead A Mindful Walk Through Highland Park. Participants will explore the park and its history using an intrinsic cognitive approach from the entry gate, to the garden fountain, to the reservoir. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 2:00pm, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at 1467 North Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

On Saturday, August 12, 2023 DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh sets sail with their third summer Boat Tour, The Mighty Monongahela. Led by engineer and local bridge expert Todd Wilson and architectural historian Justin Greenawalt, this immersive tour features fragments of an industrial past dotting the riverbanks along the Mon and how it began shaping the fortunes of Pittsburgh long before iron and steel. Ticket prices range from $15 - $40. Tour boarding begins at 12:30pm and disembarks at 3:00pm from the Station Square docks at 350 West Station Square Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

Join popular local tour host Alan Irvine for an insightful look at our city’s great history with Roots Of Pittsburgh on Saturday, August 12, 2023. On this walking tour, guests will explore magnificent buildings, uncover quirky public art, discuss the best places to eat, and learn about Pittsburgh's intrigues like the Great Fire of 1845, Mr. Frick's Revenge, the Wall Street of Pittsburgh, and more. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 2 hours and begins/ends at the Market Square Clock, 431 Market Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Slated for Sunday, August 13th, 2023, guests will join Award-winning historian, USMC Veteran, and founder of the Greater Hazelwood Historical Society of Pittsburgh, JaQuay Edward Carter, for Historic Hazelwood: A Tour of Pittsburgh's "Melting Pot". Explore this rich neighborhood from the 18th century John Woods House built in 1792, to wealthy suburban estates from the Industrial Revolution and a futuristic robotics facility at Mill 19. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at 4501 Lytle Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15207.

Discover the galleries, theaters, and quirky art filling the blocks between Penn and Liberty when popular DOP tour host, Alan Irvine, leads Uncovering The Cultural District on Saturday, August 19th at 10:00am. On this in-depth guided walking tour, guests will learn about the decades-long strategy that transformed this corner of Downtown into the thriving arts hub we enjoy today. Tickets are priced at $25. Tour duration is 90 minutes and begins at the Heinz Hall Outdoor Garden Gate at the corner of 6th and Liberty, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. 

Slated for Sunday, August 20, 2023, guests can experience a deep and fascinating look at the final resting place of some of Pittsburgh's movers and shakers like Pie Traynor, Errol Garner and many more at Walking Homewood Cemetery. Led by seasoned DOP tour host Jay Steele, this walking tour will unlock the history and stories that once made the Cemetery's residents so successful. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins at the Homewood Cemetery Entrance Gates at South Dallas and Aylesboro, 1599 South Dallas Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15217.

With two upcoming tour dates to choose from, art-lovers can take part in a rare evening walking tour celebrating Light-Based Public Art: Downtown led by arts administrator and curator Rachel Klipa. Guests will experience six artworks including "The Puddler," a neon light piece from the 1930s; "Cell Phone Disco," an interactive work in Tito Way by the artist collective Informationlab; and "For Pittsburgh," an LED artwork on the roof of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center by artist Jenny Holzer. Tour dates are on August 25 and September 8, 2023 with tickets priced at $25. Tour duration is 60-minutes and begins/ends at the Agnes R. Katz Plaza, 667 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
